Guaymi or Ngäbe?
When working cross-culturally, terminology can often become confusing. We have seen this be the case with the name of the people group that we are working with. To the majority of the world they are known as the Guaymi. This name was given to them after the Spanish conquest and it's origin is in dispute. The name that is used by the indigenous themselves is Ngäbe(Nyaw-bay). Thoughout this website you will find both terms used. Guaymi because this site is designed for non-indigenous people who most likely are only familiar with the Guaymi name. Ngäbe out of respect to the culture and to educate those who do not know the term. Please know that nothing derogatory is meant by the use of either name and when we interact with the indigenous we use the term Ngäbe. For more information of the Guaymi/Ngäbe people, please explore the Guaymi/Ngäbe section of this site.
