What is the local currency?

The basic unit of currency in Costa Rica is the colon.  We would recommend NOT exchanging money at the airport.  Most hotels, grocery stores, and many restaurants accept U.S. dollars as well as colones and many of these locations will also exchange dollars for colones.  The best exchange rate is normally found at the Costa Rican banks.  Most U.S. based credit/check cards will work in Costa Rica though many small shops and restaurants only accept cash.
